Tony Gibbon

I am a Consultant Trauma and Orthopaedic Surgeon specialising entirely in knee surgery. My NHS appointment is at York Teaching Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. I also practice at Clifton Park Hospital and York Nuffield Hospital.

Having been an Orthopaedic surgeon for over 25 years and having spent the last 18 as a Consultant in York, I have extensive experience of managing all types of knee conditions, treating children as well as the elderly, sports injuries as well as all types of arthritis.

My practice is busier than many peers; in 2014 I carried out over 320 knee replacements, including over 80 partial knee replacements, 80 ACL (anterior cruciate ligament) reconstructions and over 450 knee arthroscopies (keyhole operations). My knee replacement results are collected by the National Joint registry and feature in the top 5%.

As well as introducing modern knee reconstruction techniques to York, I have also expanded the range of surgical treatments for knee arthritis, patello-femoral (knee cap) pain and instability.

This specialisation means that I see patients referred by other Orthopaedic Consultants as well as those sent by physiotherapists and General Practitioners. I also see patients who wish to self-refer.

Some of the specialist procedures I carry out, not undertaken by general lower limb surgeons, include;

As well as my role as Senior Orthopaedic Tutor at Hull York Medical School, I have run a successful surgical fellowship program for 10 years, providing specialist training for surgeons applying to become Consultant Knee surgeons. My previous fellows have been successfully appointed as Consultants throughout the UK as well as in countries including India, Israel and Libya!

I have several years experience of delivering invited lectures and joining faculty on courses throughout the UK as well as also demonstrating surgical techniques, sharing the results of my work on visits further afield including Germany, Spain, Brazil and India.

My goal is to improve the quality of life for all my patients by eliminating or greatly reducing pain, restoring as close to normal knee function as possible. I aim to give clear concise reassuring explanation to patients of what is wrong with their knee; a clear understanding helps people recover more quickly.

I hope this web-site provides some useful understanding of some knee conditions and their possible treatments.  If you require further information or feel that you might benefit from such treatments please get in touch or arrange referral; I should be very happy to see you.
